Concert Review

(transposted from my trusty livejournal page)
So the other night my good friend Mr. S-Dizzle and I ventured off to the big MC Chris show (the Toribug was unfortunately unable to attend because of illness). One cool thing about the show is that is was absolutely free-I picked up the tickets at a radio station (they were just giving them out) and we even found a free parking spot 20 feet from the venue. The parking spot was a miracle, as for those who have not been to Salt Lake City at night, especially when there's a show, there is absolutely NO parking. Anyway, it was in this tiny side room at the Lo-Fi Cafe as the main room was filled with nu-metal freaks who were there for the transplanted Seether/30 Seconds to Mars show (pity them). So we were packed like sardines into this tiny room, but it was probably for the best as there were only about 100 people there so it made it seem crowded.

Anyway, as for the show, we got there about 3/4 of the way through the seconf of two openers, a band known as SNMNMNM. They seemed entertaining, the music was good, the instrumentation unique (guitars, drums, keys, trumpet, tuba, accordions, etc, etc, etc), but where we were standing for their set (in the very back) you could not understand one word the singer said. Even between songs it was just a jumbled mess. But like i said, the music was fun, so I'll have to find them on the net and give them a listen. As for the main course, MC Chris came out with his "dj" in all his nerdy glory. I use the term dj loosely as it was just a dude who hit play on his iBook and then stood there while MC Chris rapped along. Anyway, for the unitiated, MC Chris is a rapper who gained minor fame as MC Pee Pants/Sir Loin on Aqua Teen Hunger Force (Sundays, Cartoon Network). He is this short, pudgy, nerdy white guy with a high pitched voice who raps about things geeky and absurd. The songs are quite entertaining as well as ridiculous and humorous. Chris came out with a wicked cold or flu or something and struggled between every song. Amazingly, he made it through nearly every song without a hitch which was quite impressive considering his non-stop, very fast style. Between songs, when not coughing up a lung, he delivered some amusing banter. Comments ranged from listing video games he was excited about and his tour stops at Gamestop to the scale model of Mt. Vernon he built for his nuts to live in (I kid you not). There was also a lot of banter between random people yelling in the crowd and him, much like with a stand up comic, and in that fashion, MC Chris promptly put them in their place. All in all a very amusing and entertaining experience, and a show that comes highly recommended to all.

Pros:
+Hilarious
+He is actually a good rapper, it was cool to hear him go
+Worth going just to see the crowd; it ranged from metalheads to punkers with hawks to mods to computer nerds obviously at their first show
+Did I mention it was hilarious?

Cons:
-He was sick
-Bumhugs standing next to me (why do they always end up standing next to me? It's like I send out invitations or something!!!)

Overall: A
